Finding an accountant

If you are in need of an accountant the best place to start is with the people you know who already use an accountant. A referral is by far the best way to find any professional since you will be able to talk to somebody who has actually dealt with the accountant you are considering. In addition to anybody that you know who has an accountant you may also want to talk to people you know who regularly deal with accountants, like your banker. If you don't know anybody who can refer you to an accountant you will need to start looking for names in the phone book.

When you are looking for an accountant it is important that you make sure that you limit your search to an accountant who has experience in the type of work that you need help with. For example if you are looking for an accountant for your small business you will probably not want to hire one who only has experience working with large corporations.

Once you have a few names of potential accountants you are going to want to do a little bit of research on them in order to weed out any that may not be appropriate. At this stage you will want to find out about things like their experience level and what kind of work they usually do. Most of this can be ascertained by calling their office although you will also want to check with your local accounting association.

The next step after you have found a likely candidate to be your accountant is to schedule a meeting. This will allow you to discuss your needs so that the accountant can let you know if they will be able to help you. This meeting will also allow you to have any questions that you have answered. Most importantly it will allow you to make sure that you are comfortable with this person as your accountant.

One important question that you will want to have answered is whether the person that you are dealing with will be the one the one who actually handles your business. If you go with a big firm you may find that most of the actual work is passed off to junior employees, this may or may not be an issue for you.

The last thing that you have to do if you have found an accountant that you are comfortable with is to do a reference check. Any accountant should have no problem giving you references of other clients they have worked with. Make sure that you actually contact these references so that you know what they really think of the accountant you are considering. If the references check out then you can go ahead and hire that person to be your new accountant.
